Fear the Walking Dead: Who will win the Batalla del Agua?

As Fear the Walking Dead prepares for its September 10th mid-season premiere, fans can’t help but wonder who might win the Batalla del Agua.

Southern California might be nice and green in TV and movies, but without water it returns to its arid and dry natural landscape. Water is hard to come by since it doesn’t rain a lot on a regular basis, so the need for water is one of the first rules of survival. But as Fear the Walking Dead returns for the second half of season 3, the battle for water is going to be problematic.

At first glance, the notion that Daniel Salazar and his friends are in control of the Tijuana dam would seem to be a good thing for everyone. Madison and the residents of Broke Jaw Ranch need water. So too does Qaletaqa Walker and his people, including Daniel’s “missing” daughter Ofelia.

Therein lies the problem.

Though they were once part of the same group, Daniel is likely soon to discover that the group has splintered. Madison is aligned with a group of people who are sworn enemies of the people Ofelia is aligned with. Ofelia can point to what Jeremiah Otto did to her as reason to align with Walker, but Madison can point to the downed helicopter that led to Travis’s death, as well as Ofelia’s role in poisoning Nick and the other members of the militia.

Daniel is someone who values and respects loyalty. Madison turned to him for advice on the Abigail. She understands who he is and the value of his tactics. (And now we know why — she, too, is a killer) Daniel owes as much loyalty to Madison as he does his own daughter.

How will Daniel deal with this conundrum? They all need water, but even if both groups offer payment for the water, will he be willing to help both sides knowing that there is a battle raging between them? It’s quite the pickle, to be sure.
