Nick Clark is many things, but a mama’s boy doesn’t seem to be one of them. Will that change in Fear the Walking Dead season 3B?

When we first met Nick Clark in the first season of Fear the Walking Dead, he was a mess. Strung out, hiding from his mom, causing problems for the family. Then the apocalypse arrived and Nick started changing. He’s still who he is, but now that he’s cemented the Clark Family firmly in the goings-on at Broke Jaw Ranch, will he following his mother’s plans, or will he continue to stay on his own path?

For Nick, the zombie apocalypse is almost a good thing. He has grown up a lot since leaving Los Angeles, and he has learned from his “mentors” along the way. Victor Strand saw Nick for who he really is and Nick seemed to blossom under his tutelage. From there, Celia gave Nick some keen insight into whether or not the Infected possess the souls of the people they once were. At La Colonia, Nick saw another perspective thanks to Luciana, who helped him lead their people to safety only to be killed at the border. Now, Nick has seemingly allied himself with Troy as brothers in arms, but Troy has no idea that Nick killed his father.

All along, Nick was on his own learning these lessons. He continued to talk to Celia despite his mother’s warnings, and he went off on his own after the group fled Casa de Abigail because he needed to find himself.

With Luciana gone, and Ofelia on the opposite side of the war, will Nick be able to follow along with Madison’s plans to make Broke Jaw Ranch their home? It’s hard to say. Nick was not expecting to find Luciana gone, so now he has to decide for himself whether to stay with his family or go find his girlfriend. His mother’s revelations about her dark past likely won’t change anything, and the touch of bipolar disorder Nick inherited from his father probably won’t help him to make anything but an impulsive decision that could have lasting consequences for the rest of his family.

All in all, Nick doesn’t follow any other path than his own. He isn’t going to listen to everything Madison tells him because he’s his own person and he always has been. They aren’t going to start bonding just because of what happened with Jeremiah Otto. Nick will continue to do his own thing. That’s how it has been and that’s how it will probably be as the second half of season 3 plays out.

Fear the Walking Dead season 3 returns September 10 on AMC.
