Greg Nicotero does a little bit of everything on The Walking Dead. Now he’s going to be doing a little bit of everything on his new horror anthology series, Shock Theatre. He sat down with EW recently to talk about his hopes for the series.

In the interview Nicotero said that he will be directing some of the episodes of Shock Theatre as well as working on the writing and development and the effects. But that doesn’t mean that the series will look anything like The Walking Dead.

Because the series is an anthology each episode will have a different story, tone, and feel. Horror and sci fi anthologies enjoyed a heyday in the late 1950s and 60s with shows like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. Nicotero hinted that Shock Theatre will be a throwback to those shows and have the same tone and feeling. He said:

"“Shock Theatre is my homage to ‘50s horror movies. I’ve always loved that genre, the idea that people would take things that they were terrified of in society at that time and turn them into some sort of fantastic outrageous sci-fi monster movie. Back then it was the Cold War, it was going to outer space, it was radiation. Everything that people were afraid of, they’re like, “Well, listen, if this is something we’re afraid of, we’re going to figure out a way to deal with it psychologically, so we’re going to do a little movie about it and try to clear our conscience, so to speak.”I always loved that. I thought that there was something so fun about it. And that’s what Shock Theatre is. Shock Theatre is taking relevant themes today and putting that kind of fun Shaun of the Dead twist on them. I think Shaun of the Dead is probably the closest in tone that I can ever think about for Shock Theatre because it was funny and thrilling, and you love the characters, and it was scary, and had great moments in it, and was all-around completely entertaining. That’s the goal.”"

The Walking Dead Return And 100th Episode

Shock Theatre hasn’t even gone into production yet so there’s no word on when the show will actually air. Nicotero has been a little busy for the past year working on season 8 of The Walking Dead. He’s directing some of the pivotal episodes of the season, as usual. Including the highly anticipated season 8 premiere.

More from Undead Walking

The Walking Dead season 8 premiere is the 100th episode of the show. That’s a landmark that many shows never get to reach. Which makes it all the more remarkable that a show that very few people even though would last two seasons is now heading into season 8 and not slowing down at all.

The Walking Dead season 8 premieres on AMC on October 22nd.
