15) Nick Shoots Otto / Madison Reveals she shot her father
Cause and effect. There’s arguably never been truer words on Fear the Walking Dead than when Madison recalls the tale of how she shot her own father. Telling the two young Clarks, he was an alcoholic and hurting her mom, so she took action and doesn’t regret it. Well, when Nick discovers skulls underneath the wooden boards of his room (where Otto had shot at while drunk) he realizes Jeremiah Otto is not the father figure he’d been searching for.
When Madison tells Otto, there’s no way out but to sacrifice himself. It’s for the good of the community she explains, and when she hands Otto a revolver, he scoffs. Only for Nick to enter the room and shoot Otto square in the head. His severed head becomes a peace offering for walker, who believes the tribe and ranch community can live side by side with this blood feud put behind them.
One wonders if Madison had never told the tale if Nick would have still done it… Perhaps, Madison told it with a subtle unspoken expressed intent. An extra prodding in that direction after all, was what it took for Nick to do such a deed. The high regard Nick seemed to hold Jeremiah Otto in shattered in disrepair.
