14) Jeremiah Otto leaves Ofelia in the Desert
The issue of race is rarely actively touched upon in both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. In this one instance, Jeremiah Otto is shown to have left Ofelia in the middle of the desert to die rather than bring her back to his ranch community. Why? In Jeremiah’s words, he ‘didn’t think a person of her ethnic descent would go over well where he lived’. Telling Ofelia, ‘there’s no use for her on the ranch, so he’s not giving her a ride’. Ofelia spits at Jeremiah’s feet in shocked reaction to what she’s been told.
When later Ofelia is rescued by Walker and nursed back to health with ‘The Nation’, she naturally supports their plight against the ranch. The same ranch that abandoned her in her weakest moment to perish. She tells Madison, ‘The Nation is my family now’, when questioned about her betrayal upon getting Nick sick accidentally.
Jeremiah’s decision is a pivotal plot point in the season, changing the potential course for Ofelia as a friend and important contributor to the community. It’s his outlook on Ofelia’s people that causes him to shortchange her on a chance at life. Believing her as unworthy to the cause. Inevitably, this decision comes back to haunt Jeremiah.
