Zombies are taking over our TVs
These days there are zombies all over television. Zombies are the new vampires, it would seem. But is it really a new trend, or have they always been here?
These days it seems like you turn on your TV and all you see are zombies. Whereas The Walking Dead was once the only zombie show on television, now other shows like Game of Thrones are cashing in on the zombie craze with their White Walkers. There’s even a trendier version of zombies via iZombie, and more zombies expected in this new TV season.
Zombies have captured popular imagination for years. The idea of the dead rising is not a new one. Even in ancient times, people were afraid that the dead might rise from their graves so some ancient cultures went to drastic measures to ensure that the dead stayed buried. Ancient Greek burial sites have been found with rocks pinning bodies down, presumably to make sure no one gets back up after the bodies have been buried.
Now, with the White Walkers getting a lot of attention on Game of Thrones along with the Walkers we have grown to love on The Walking Dead, it would seem that zombies are the new vampires and they’re taking over our television sets.
Shows like iZombie bring a fresh spin on the zombie genre, while Gotham might be resurrecting one of the oldest pop culture zombies out there: Solomon Grundy. Fans familiar with DC Comics might recognize that name. Formerly known as Cyrus Gold, Solomon Grundy first came back from the dead back in the 1944 All-American Comics #61. Over the years, Grundy has fought the likes of Batman, Superman and Green Lantern. His zombie nature gives him superhuman strength and the ability to heal quickly. Solomon Grundy is expected to debut on Gotham as former henchman Butch comes back to life after taking a bullet to the head.
