Fear The Walking Dead The Diviners Review
By Sonya Iryna
Fear The Walking Dead’s midseason premiere delivered two stellar episodes. “The Diviners” had a surprise reunion and brought some key storylines together.
In the first part of the two part Fear The Walking Dead midseason premiere Madison and Walker had to deal with the Troy problem. Together they are trying to triage the increasingly tense situation at the ranch.
But once the Troy situation was under control they had to solve another problem: the ranch is almost out of water and they just doubled the number of people living there. They need to find more water. Quickly.
So leaving Jake and Alicia to handle the situation at the ranch, with Nick helping out where he could, Madison and Walker head out to try and find enough water to keep the ranch going.
That was probably a mistake. Troy may have been unstable, and he may have been a loose cannon, but at least he had a personality and was able to get people to follow him. Jake isn’t even a figurehead at this point. He’s been completely replaced by Madison, and by Alicia.
Jake doesn’t seem to serve any real purpose at the ranch anymore other than giving Madison and Alicia legitimacy. He’s only there because the ranchers won’t accept leadership from “outsiders” or women. Jake is definitely under-utilized. Hopefully he’s going to start to step up a little more in the rest of the season.
The Bazaar
Madison and Walker head to a place a couple days away where a sort of Black Market bazaar has been created. It’s tightly controlled and they have to give up their weapons to get inside. It’s expensive, but pretty much anything that you would need can be purchased or traded for inside. It looks like the site is an old fairgrounds site.
They find someone who can get them about half the water that they need. But that deal goes south when Madison spots Strand, who is in trouble as usual. It’s great to see Strand again and it was really good to see Madison and Strand together again. They had a pretty good bond from the beginning.
Reunited At Last
There was even a really touching moment between the two when Strand hugs her after he realizes that Travis is gone. In this show it’s often seemed like there was no loyalty at all between the core group of survivors. So it was fantastic to see Madison and Strand have a genuine moment.
Strand told Madison about the dam, but didn’t tell her Daniel Salazer is alive and at the dam. That is another reunion that has been a long time coming.
It was also really nice to see Madison go to bat for Strand and rescue him. Madison comes off as pretty cold and calculating most of the time. Seeing that she does have a heart after all gives fans a little hope that her character isn’t as flat and one note as she has been in the past.
Riot At The Ranch
The people at the ranch were pretty unhappy about the new water restrictions. And entitled white people don’t take well to being told that they can’t have as much of something as they think they are entitled to. There was an awful lot of “Let me talk to your manager” attitude being thrown around when they were told they could only have 2 gallons of water per person per day.
Madison told Alicia about the water shortage but told her not to tell the people on the ranch because it would cause a panic. So, Alicia told everyone that the water was running out. In her defense she thought that sharing that information might make everyone grow up and stop acting like spoiled children. She thought that when they knew what the situation was the people would suck it up and work together so that they could all survive. But, she was wrong.
There original ranch residents held a riot that was worse than women fighting over the last Kate Spade purse during a clearance sale. The Nation members wanted to take control of the well, but the ranch residents weren’t going to let that happen. These people are never going to work together, even if puts their survival at risk. Unless Madison, Walker and now Strand can make it to the dam and convince Lola to give them some water the ranch is doomed.

More Reunions?
So next week on Fear The Walking Dead it looks like Madison and Strand will be reunited with Daniel at the dam. Will Madison tell Daniel that Ofelia is alive? Will Daniel go to the ranch with them? And if he does, will he join The Nation with Ofelia or stay on Madison’s side?
One thing that’s clear is that season 3B of Fear The Walking Dead is going to be just as intense and fast paced as season 3A. The rest of this season is going to be very exciting as things come to a head on Broke Jaw Ranch.
