Book Review: Only Dead on the Inside by James Breakwell is a fun read

Only Dead on the Inside: A Parent’s Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse from James Breakwell is a funny and charming take on surviving the apocalypse.
When I was approached with the opportunity to review a guidebook about how to survive the zombie apocalypse with a family, I was hesitant to accept the task. In my mind, I didn’t see how anything could compare to The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks.
However, after digging deeper into the book being presented to me, I quickly accepted. Written by James Breakwell, the book titled Only Dead on the Inside: A Parent’s Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse, which is scheduled for release on October 10, 2017, is a combination of information and entertainment that any zombie fan may enjoy, making it very different from the book by Max Brooks.
Some people may know Breakwell from Twitter, where his account @XplodingUnicorn has approximately one million followers thanks to his comedy content and parenting jokes.
Breakwell is a big fan of The Walking Dead. Ever since season 1 of the AMC zombie drama, he has thought about how to survive the undead apocalypse. However, he wants to do so with his family, not just as a sole survivor.
Describing himself as an “out-of-shape dad with four kids”, Breakwell wanted to approach parenting from a different angle and make use of his background in comedy. He succeeded in both with Only Dead on the Inside.
Of course, the basis of the book is wanting to entertain the reader, but the doses of realism and relatability are strong as well and make readers want to install some of his tips and tricks into everyday life.
The tone of Only Dead on the Inside: A Parent’s Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse is a conversational one, and you could easily imagine hearing the words come alive in a comedy club. This approach to the book gives it a unique feel and makes the content connect in an even stronger way.

Connecting with this book was something I was worried about since I’m a single man in my late 30’s with no children. However, my days of watching kids for friends and family immediately came rushing back to me as I laughed about the amazing situations being discussed.
Included in the book along with the hilarious text are comic strips, flowcharts, graphs, tables, and more to break up the blocks of text and keep the book feeling fresh and charming from start to finish.
As a whole, fans of zombies and those with children will find Only Dead on the Inside: A Parent’s Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse to be a charming, funny, and informative book they will want to share with others after reading.
