Nick and Troy went on a trip in Fear the Walking Dead “El Matadero” that turns into something straight out of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

“We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold,” wrote the late Gonzo Doctor of Journalism Hunter S. Thompson. On Fear the Walking Dead “El Matadero” we saw Nick and Troy go on a journey that would make Dr. Gonzo proud. After ingesting pieces of brain stem, the two young men went on what can only be described as an acid trip, complete with hallucinations and extreme personal danger. This is the moment when Fear the Walking Dead turned into Fear and Loathing and the Walking Dead.

Nick’s experimentation with eating brain stems is nothing new. Tripping on adrenaline is something that has been around for a while. In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a book that was made into a movie starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro and based on author Hunter S. Thompson’s experiences as a “Gonzo journalist,” there were stories of people being killed so that their adrenal glands could be harvested. Depp’s Raoul Duke himself finds himself high as a kite after taking a hit of pure adrenaline.

El Matadero tells Nick, with a wink that the brain stems come from pigs, but it’s more than likely that they were from actual humans. What’s terrifying is that they could have been from the dead for all Nick knows, and this is what makes his actions so incredibly dangerous. Not only did Nick and Troy lose complete control, but they made themselves known to the wrong crowd. Now they’re targets, and when they’re high they are vulnerable to just about anything.

Knowing that Nick’s addiction is something that takes over like wildfire, the idea that Nick has found a new drug is scary. He will want more, and the question is what he is willing to do to get more. Will Troy play into this plan, or will he try to stop Nick now that they have decided to stay behind? Only time will tell, but nothing good can come from this.
