Fear The Walking Dead: Who ISN’T The Worst? Part 3
By Liam O'Leary
Madison
A funny thing happened yesterday when I started hearing back about my “Who’s The Worst?” article: Both fans and colleagues started telling me I picked the wrong person. Apparently, the person I deemed this season’s most irredeemable, Proctor John, was not, in fact, the actual most irredeemable. Apparently, according to people I heard from, anyway…it’s Madison.
Honestly, I’m not surprised. I myself was left…unsure of what to think of Madison. I mean, she killed Troy, almost certainly made him worse by exploiting his psychological problems, lied to the ranchers and nearly causing them to go to war with Black Hat because of it; None of those are especially commendable.
However, it wasn’t all bad for Madison.
While she may have done Broke Jaw Ranch wrong, she did do right (Or at least try to) by her friends.
When Strand was sentenced to guard the entrance to El Bazar from infected, Madison sacrificed all the gold coins she and Qaletaqa would have used to buy water to pay for Strand’s freedom.
She went to similar lengths for Ofelia. Madison did everything she could to prolong her life.
Despite admonishing from Strand, she sold several of the weapons they’d planned to give to Daniel to buy Ofelia a room, fluids and painkillers. While Strand found the effort pointless, Madison wanted to make sure that Ofelia got a chance to see her father, even if only briefly, before she died.
But the best display of Madison’s loyalty may have been her response to learning about The Proctors.
While Strand tried to convince her and Nick to escape, Madison insisted on staying, refusing to abandon Daniel and Lola after they’d provided her, Nick, and Strand sanctuary. Madison even helped rig the explosives to blow the dam as Daniel’s final bargaining chip should The Proctor’s have gained too much ground.
After thinking about it, as much as part of me wants to agree with those who say Madison is the most irredeemable character this season, I just can’t.
The logic is simply not there. The main reason why I deemed Proctor John the worst villain of Season Three is quite simple: He did nothing that was redeemable. Everything he did was selfish, power-hungry, threatening, and violent.
While my opinion of Madison is still up in the air, I can’t deny the good things she did do this season. Her efforts to protect her kids and her loyalty to her friends are commendable. While I won’t (And didn’t) say she was the most redeemable this season, I can’t in good conscience deem her the most irredeemable, either.
