The Walking Dead’s 100th episode is quickly approaching. Today AMC released a new clip of the cold open for the season 8 premiere.

The Walking Dead and AMC are going all out to amp up fan excitement for All Out War. In addition to a The Walking Dead marathon airing all week on AMC and specials about the show today, AMC released a new video clip from the premiere episode of season 8.The new clip is just over 3 minutes of the cold open for The Walking Dead’s 100th episode and season 8 premiere titled, “Mercy”.

There’s a lot going on in this cold open sequence. In the beginning, it appears to show what many have guessed is a time jump. The camera focuses on a cane, hinting that Rick is injured in the war. And it focuses on a clock that is stopped at 8:22.

There are several cut images of Rick, including one of him standing in front of Glenn and Abe’s graves. As he stands there, it’s easy to see that he still carries the weight of feeling responsible for their deaths. Especially Glenn, who saved Rick so long ago.

Then the clip shifts to a lot of activity going on at The Hilltop. It looks like members of all three communities are working together creating weapons and gathering supplies. It also looks like they may be armoring up vehicles.

A key scene reveals that Daryl and Dwight are communicating with messages wrapped around arrows. Dwight gets an arrow from Daryl that has a message “Tomorrow” written on it. Looks like The Survivors are getting ready for a first strike and Dwight’s going to help them do it.

The Community Alliance Is Ready For War

The clip also shows Rick, King Ezekiel, and Maggie addressing the survivors who have gathered at The Hilltop. Rick is starting one of his trademark motivation speeches. But this speech is different.

There’s an urgency in the delivery that is unusual for Rick. It’s a lot more aggressive than his usual speeches. He tells the survivors the world is theirs by right. He also says that only person has to die and he will kill him. Obviously, he’s referencing Negan. Will Rick kill Negan? Or will he ultimately let him live as a prisoner?

It’s exciting to see Rick go on the offensive. Other than the ill-fated slaughter of the Saviors at the outpost, Rick doesn’t really go on the offensive very much. This clip and other videos that have been released over the last couple weeks indicate that the groups have adopted a much more methodical, deliberate and savage approach to taking on The Saviors.
