On The Walking Dead Gregory escaped the onslaught on The Sanctuary, but what will happen to him if he tries to return to The Hilltop?

In the season 8 premiere of The Walking Dead, Gregory tried to declare The Hilltop’s allegiance to Negan. But the residents of The Hilltop weren’t having it. They are united behind Maggie now, with Jesus helping her to lead the colony.

When Gregory threatened to kick out anyone who backed Maggie, and their families, Maggie told The Hilltop fighters to leave if they needed to. But no one did. Maggie is now the chosen leader of The Hilltop.

Negan and The Saviors have no use for Gregory. Negan’s not stupid. He knows that Gregory is a weak and ineffectual leader and a self-serving sycophant. So The Saviors don’t want him. And now neither does The Hilltop.

Presumably, Gregory will head back to The Hilltop and try to hide out in the mansion. But Maggie and Jesus, along with the other residents of The Hilltop, are going to have to deal with the problem of Gregory. How will Maggie handle him?

What Should Happen

Gregory is never going to accept being demoted from leadership. He is absolutely ill-equipped to live in the brutal world of The Walking Dead. He’s a consummate bureaucrat who only knows how to scheme and manipulate to try to keep his own small bit of power.

More from Undead Walking

He’s proven that he can’t be trusted several times over. And he has no real interest in making life better for the residents of The Hilltop. So giving him any kind of position in the new leadership of the colony is not an option.

He really has nothing to contribute to the society. But can Maggie kill him in cold blood? Or will she choose to exile him instead? Exiling him would really be the same as killing him since he has no survival skills. He couldn’t even manage to kill one walker.

Keeping him prisoner wouldn’t really work either. That’s just wasting resources on someone who is never going to add any value to the community that is finally coming together at The Hilltop.

A Death Sentence

Does Gregory deserve to die for his crimes? Would Maggie or Jesus be able to justify killing him to themselves? Part of setting up a functioning society is having some sort of procedure in place to punish those who break the rules of the society. Without that, society can’t function.

So even though Maggie might find it difficult the only real solution to the problem of Gregory is to kill him. In The Walking Dead world leaders have to make tough life or death decisions. Maggie needs to make this one in order to protect herself and Baby Rhee. And to make sure that The Hilltop has the chance to grow into a thriving community in the future.
