When last we saw Negan and Father Gabriel on The Walking Dead, they were in a storage unit surrounded by Walkers. Plot twist: What if no one rescues Negan?

It’s safe to say that Negan will manage to escape from the modular storage unit that he was stuck in at the end of the season premiere of The Walking Dead. It’s not so clear for Father Gabriel, but Negan might need Gabriel’s help to make it out alive. Whether or not that means Gabriel survives is a whole other story.

But let’s take a moment to consider the social structure of the Sanctuary and all of the Saviors who live in fear from Negan’s governance. What if no one comes to his rescue? The very real possibility is that Negan will have no help to escape and it’s all up to him.

As soon as we saw the shot of the trailer being surrounded by a herd of Walkers, the chances of Negan and Gabriel simply fleeing were slim to none. Does Negan expect to see his people come to his aid? Or will Negan know that he has to escape on his own?

Negan’s whole world is based on following rules and accepting the consequences of breaking the rules. The Saviors live in fear of his wrath, for sure, so what happens if they turn their backs on him? It would be easy to say that they saw him get shot, and they saw the trailer surrounded, and then there was the not so small matter of having the entire Sanctuary under attack. It’s not like they can focus all of their time and energy looking for Negan.

Surely he’d understand that, right?

In all likelihood, Negan knows that his life depends on making an escape on his own. Now that Gabriel is there, he can always distract the herd with Gabriel while he gets away. Negan is way too smart to leave his life up to his people. Absolute power corrupts absolutely (thanks, Lord Acton), after all, and behind Negan are a bunch of his generals, like Simon, who are itching to take power.

In order for Negan to get out alive, he needs to find his own way out. It will be interesting to see how he pulls it off, because we know he will. It’s just a matter of how he escapes and who he takes down in order to make it happen.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
