The 10 saddest deaths from AMC’s The Walking Dead season 1-7
By Sonya Iryna
2. Hershel Greene
Death is a given on a show like The Walking Dead. But some deaths fans just never get over. Hershel’s death is one of those deaths. Hershel’s transformation rivals Carol’s in some ways.
When the group first came to the farm he still thought that the walkers could be cured. He learned a hard lesson about what they really are. And he floundered a little. But he never lost his faith, his humanity, or his core values. And he wouldn’t let the others lose those things either.
Hershel remained the moral stalwart of the group. He didn’t hesitate to call Rick out when Rick was failing as a leader. But he had an immense capability to understand the gravity of the decisions that Rick had to make and he supported Rick unconditionally.
He was more than the moral touchstone of the group. He was the patriarch of the group, not just of the Greene family. Even as The Governor was holding Michonne’s katana to his throat he smiled at Rick for Rick’s willingness to try to work out a solution. His last act was to give Rick his approval.
It is tragic that Hershel will never get to know his grandchild or see the powerful leader that Maggie is becoming. He would be so proud of his little girl. And he would be proud of Rick too, for continuing to fight to keep the group alive and together. Hershel may be gone but his presence is always felt. He will forever be missed.
