Sometimes the darkest hours can be illuminated by a shining light. On The Walking Dead, Baby Gracie might be the salvation for one of the characters.

If you haven’t seen this week’s episode of The Walking Dead, “Monsters,” then be aware that spoilers lie ahead. You have been warned.

Rick and Daryl fought off the Saviors in the hallway and for a moment it looked pretty dire as Daryl ran out of ammunition. Throughout the whole ordeal there was one question on my mind: Where was Gracie?

The last time we saw Gracie was as she slept in her cradle. That’s when Rick ran into Morales and they had their tense standoff. With all of the gunfire, I have to say that Gracie is a pretty sound sleeper. You’d think she would have been screaming bloody murder, but instead she was quiet. We didn’t see her again until the end of the episode when Rick handed her over to Aaron to return her to the Hilltop.

We can imagine that Rick knew about Eric when he saw Aaron. Aaron was clearly in shock, but seeing the baby changed him. He offered to take the little girl to the Hilltop because that’s where he was going with Eric anyway, but Gracie gave him a new mission. Not only was he on a mission to report back to Maggie, but he was also taking responsibility for this baby. On the one hand he lost his lover, but now he was in charge of another life. This renews his sense of purpose.

With a devastating loss like losing Eric, Aaron now has something [someone] to focus on, to take his attention away from his grief for the briefest of moments. In that sense, Gracie is Aaron’s salvation. Whereas Aaron might have become self-destructive, he now has this little girl to care for.

Time will tell how Aaron’s relationship with Gracie plays out, but for now she offers him salvation. He can honor Eric’s memory by caring for her because that’s what Eric would do.
