2. Rick’s group attack the Saviors’ outpost

This decision would probably deserve to be number 1 if consequences were the only criterion. Of all the bad decisions made by characters on The Walking Dead, it is arguably the one that had the most devastating impact on the lives of our heroes.

Thank you for your input, Daryl

And this one is, at least partly, on Daryl. He was the first to suggest attacking the Saviors when he argued that Negan was probably some sort of “boogeyman” whose power relied on people giving in easily to his demands out of fear. Which was, in fact, not such a bad assessment of Negan: after all, he’s just a guy walking around with a bat and, given how he treats the people around him, it’s rather hard to believe no one has put a bullet in his head yet. It is certainly true that Negan has the power that people allow him to have, by giving in to his bullying.

Negan has shown time and time again that he wasn’t such a great strategist: he does little scouting, little intelligence gathering, and is just rather careless in general. However, his strategy of fear has worked, and Negan has been around for long enough to extend his power and gather numbers – his only real strength.

Scouting: you REALLY should try it

The philosophy behind the plan may have been good, but the huge problem was the execution. The necessity of getting food for Alexandria seems to have pushed Rick and his friends to rush to action without taking even the most elementary precautions: getting to know more about the Saviors, assessing their strength and numbers probably wasn’t an impossible task. If only our heroes had taken a little time to spy on the Saviors before storming their outpost and slaughtering them all… they might have saved themselves a lot of pain and heartbreak.

So, this decision was mostly made disastrous by poor preparation and it definitely deserves to be high on this list because of consequences alone. Another decision, though, also had dire consequences and was even less rational than this one…
