Dwight and Eugene are brought face to face in a rather friendly, yet tense encounter in the latest sneak peek from season 8 episode 5 of The Walking Dead.

The trailer for season 8 episode 5 of The Walking Dead was both intriguing and promising: back at the Sanctuary, Negan’s lieutenants are basically in a lock-down situation. They are without their leader, they do not know how to get out, and they are getting paranoid. We see Simon getting suspicious, and we can expect a lot of tension.

New sneak peek shows Dwight and Eugene

In this very heavy atmosphere, the latest sneak peek showing a conversation between Dwight and Eugene is particularly tense and interesting. Both men will understandably be on their guards: Dwight knows he is at risk of being unmasked, while Eugene knows he is the most obvious suspect as everyone starts looking for the traitor.

Check out the Entertainment Weekly exclusive video shared on their official website:

Their conversation also refers to Eugene apparently saying things that put him in trouble – and Dwight supporting him, but we get no indication as to exactly what it was that Eugene said.

Of course, one way for Dwight to use Eugene would be to ensure Eugene does get blamed for what happened. As Eugene says himself, he is the obvious “Benedict Arnold” of the group. Dwight would benefit from the red herring. Yet, he apparently supported Eugene during the meeting – which we can assume was the one with Simon – and Eugene is so grateful that he even brings him precious pickles!

Can Dwight and Eugene team up?

So… the question that immediately comes to your mind as you watch them is: will they start working together?

There is obviously a lot of potential there, but the big question mark remains Eugene’s true loyalties. With his unique behavior, convoluted language and very high brainpower, Eugene is particularly difficult to read. He was absent from the season 8 trailer, which raised even more questions. No doubt Dwight sees the potential there: if Eugene could change allegiance that easily, could he be turned again? And yet, Dwight cannot risk revealing himself to Eugene until he knows for sure that this will work.

Another interesting moment in this sneak peek is the red paint. Eugene touches one of Dwight’s painted wooden chess pieces before Dwight can warn him that it’s not dry. We get a shot of Eugene’s hand with red paint on it. Could this be a metaphor for blood on his hands? Could this lead to a change of heart?

In any case, this sneak peek suggests that we can expect some very tense mind-reading games being played inside the Sanctuary. What do you think will happen? Will Eugene and Dwight start working together?
