It’s time to check in with the Saviors on this week’s The Walking Dead. Here’s your complete recap of “The Big Scary U.”

Father Gabriel opens the episode saying he might die. He has been redeemed, so he doesn’t fear death anymore. He’s in his church, hoping for a death that has meaning. He wants purpose and that’s what he has been given.

There’s a knock on the door and Gregory wakes up on the cot. Simon serves him some pancakes he made with Hilltop sorghum and there’s a lot of love on the platter because Gregory came to see him when he suspected that things were amiss at the Hilltop. Gregory stumbles and Simon seems to know the truth but he assures Gregory that he did the right thing. Gregory wants to know why Simon brought him there. Simon says it’s the day for him to solve the problem. He needs to eat the breakfast and solve the problem.

Next we see Gregory at a long table across from Negan, who is surrounded by his lieutenants. Gregory says he knows how to deal with negotiations and “the big scary u” and he doesn’t like killing people. Negan says he likes killing people because when you kill the right people at the right time it makes everyone happy. Killing one person could save hundreds more. That’s why they’re called “Saviors.” Dwight gets up for a smoke and Negan questions that he doesn’t want to hear Gregory speak. Negan grabs Lucille and asks Gregory to continue. Gregory says he can stop the conflict before it starts. Gavin looks on with doubt as Gregory says that all it will take is for him to tell the Hilltoppers to stop following this nonsense and they will. He says the Hilltop is his house, but Negan questions that he’s the “guy” if he didn’t know about the Widow. Negan says he thinks Gregory is playing both sides like a politician. He wonders if he should listen to Gregory, who insists that he wasn’t aware of things until they were motion. Simon grabs his arm and tells him he believes him but his job is to tell Negan so that Negan believes him. Gregory insists that the Hilltop is his and that he let Maggie in but he will fix it. Simon says that things could go back to normal if they ride in with support of Gregory, or else they’ll have to kill everyone. Negan says people are the foundation of what they’re building there and he wants to know if Simon is confused about their mission and what they do there. He asks if Simon is backsliding and Simon says they’re not. Negan says they need to win it all. They will take Rick, the Widow and the King and killing them in the right way. People will watch them die.

That’s when there is a knock at the door. Negan looks out and sees the armored cars so he says they should chat instead of wasting bullets.

And we have arrived at the season premiere.

Gavin exits muttering “Jesus Christ.”

In the storage unit, Negan tackles Gabriel and grabs his gun. He says Gabriel could have gone down fighting and he says Gabriel was smart. Negan praises him. He offers him his hand and sits Gabriel up. Negan settles against the wall and they listen to the Walkers all around them.

Negan says that Rick is an asshole, and Gabriel says that Negan is, too. Negan says Rick will get people killed. He killed Glenn and Abe, but Rick got them killed. Big difference. He saw Gabriel stop for Gregory after that speech he gave. Gabriel says he fears a “fruitless” death and Negan laughs that he was going to save him. Gabriel says there had to be a reason he did what he did. Maybe the reason was to be trapped with Negan. Maybe it was to hear Negan’s confession.
