The Wife’s Ex-Husband

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Such is the nature of Negan’s relationship with Dwight. After Dwight’s escape and subsequent return to the Sanctuary, Negan gave Dwight a spot in his inner circle even after ironing Dwight’s face to remind him not to run again.

Make no mistake about it, Dwight is good at what he does (even at being a double agent) but given his history Negan wants to make an example of him. Since Negan lost his “wife” Tina, he took Dwight’s wife in return. In order for that to work he couldn’t kill Dwight, so he decided to run Dwight’s freshly pressed face in the whole mess by putting him in a trusted spot to keep him close at all times.

Dwight is a threat to Negan because of the personal vendetta he has. Dwight is not looking for power and doesn’t want to take over at the Sanctuary so that’s not an issue, but Negan must know that Dwight would love to get revenge on the man who ruined his life in so many ways.

If you’re keeping track, of the five lieutenants in Negan’s inner circle, three of the five would have no problem seeing Negan die. It’s a tough spot for Negan to be in to be sure, and that’s why he has to keep them close.
