With so much left up in the air after the midseason finale of The Walking Dead, we have to wonder whether Andrew Lincoln will be back in season 9.

It might surprise you to learn that The Walking Dead has yet to be renewed for season 9, and moreover star Andrew Lincoln’s contract is up at the end of season 8. But fear not, because both situations should be resolved soon enough.

In an exclusive interview with Lesley Goldberg at The Hollywood Reporter, Andrew Lincoln reveals that he’s not signed on for season 9 yet and that’s mainly because the show hasn’t officially been renewed for season 9.

Lincoln was asked if he sees an end in sight for his beloved character, and his answer was refreshingly honest:

"“Yeah, I think so. I’ve said to you before and I really feel that the fans – and also for my own satisfaction – that there deserves to be an end point. There needs to be an end game and that is something that is definitely being talked about. (Laughs) I can’t get into all of that. But all of that will be answered. As I’ve said to you before – and I will continue to say – my relationship with Rick Grimes is far from over.”"

Well, that’s insightful.

With Carl’s impending death in the season 8 midseason premiere, there is lots to work out over the course of the second half of the season and that will have lots of room for improvisation given the break in the source material. This uncharted territory gives Lincoln a wide berth to really take Rick into a new gear moving forward. It’s nice knowing that Lincoln sees an inevitable end for Rick, but nothing too soon.

I’m not sure fans could deal with losing Rick just yet.

As we saw in the season 8 premiere, Rick has already told Maggie that he’ll be ready to follow her after the war is over. With Carl about to be gone, it’s anyone’s guess whether or not he’ll be ready to turn things over just yet.
