8. Carl and Michonne Get The Grimes Family Photo For Judith

Season 3, “Clear”

“Clear” was a turning point for several of the major characters, especially Michonne. But because there was so much going on in that episode it’s easy to gloss over the beginning of the wonderful relationship between Michonne and Carl that began in this episode.

At this point Michonne was still an outsider and Rick was not at all sure about letting her stay with the group. But she left Rick at Morgan’s and went with Carl as he went to find a crib for Judith and other baby supplies. He also wanted to go to nearby bar that was overrun and get a Grimes family photo that was hanging on the wall in the bar. He wanted Judith to have a photo of the mother who gave her life for Judith.

Over the course of getting the supplies and the hair raising fight to get the photo Carl and Michonne bonded. She told Carl about her son, Andre. And by the time Rick was ready to head back to the prison Michonne and Carl had a very strong connection that would continue to grow and deepen. Before there was Richonne there was Michonne and Carl. And that all started here.

This moment also was the first time that we got to see some glimpse of how Lori’s brutal death effected Carl. The fact that he risked his life to get the only remaining photo of the Grimes family showed that even though he was outwardly stoic about Lori’s death he was still a kid who was grieving. And he wanted to be sure that Lori wasn’t forgotten.
