5. Carl Gets A Tour Of The Sanctuary

Season 7, “Sing Me A Song”

Carl has become fearless over the years. Growing up in The Walking Dead world has given him an enviable acceptance of mortality. So after The Saviors staged an attack on The Hilltop when Carl and Enid arrived there he snuck into The Savior’s trucks heading back to The Sanctuary. Jesus went with him, but Carl was totally prepared to go alone.

At The Sanctuary he shot his way out of the truck killing several of The Saviors and trying valiantly to kill Negan too. Negan ended up taking Carl around The Sanctuary. Then Negan makes Carl remove the bandage and show Negan his mutilated eye. He humiliates Carl and still Carl is unfazed. Negan sees that he isn’t getting anywhere with Carl by taunting him so he tries to bond with him instead, and that goes nowhere fast.

Negan is an expert at breaking people. He does it for fun. He tried to break Carl but Carl wouldn’t break and he wouldn’t respond to either Negan’s taunts or attempts to get Carl to trust him. Carl has incredible strength for a kid, more strength than many adults. He has a fierce sense of right and wrong and he has assimilated Rick’s devotion to keeping those he loves alive. In this episode it’s obvious that Carl is 100% Rick’s son and shares the best of Rick’s qualities.
