You’ve watched the season 8 midseason finale of The Walking Dead and your jaw is on the floor. The next question: What can possibly happen next?

What. Just. Happened.

The Walking Dead dropped a bomb on the show with an improbable (and as yet impending) death in the season 8 midseason finale “How It’s Gotta Be.” That’s right, Carl Grimes was bitten on the ribs by a Walker and he’s in bad shape. He’s still alive, though, and he won’t actually leave the show until early in the second half of the season. That means there is still time for Carl to say goodbye and make sure that his death is not for nothing.

So what does this all mean? What can possibly happen next?

There are two questions being asked when we pose the query “What can possibly happen next?” On the one hand there’s the issue of what happens immediately upon this startling turn of events, and the other is how does this shape the future of the show?

With roughly two months to wait until we have an answer, let’s talk about the questions and what losing Carl means.
