The explosive midseason finale of The Walking Dead had a lot of crucial events going on. Here’s how fans reacted to the events in “How It’s Gotta Be”.

The Walking Dead promised an intense mid-season finale and it definitely delivered. “How It’s Gotta Be” gave fans Negan’s first all-out assault on Alexandria, The Hilltop, and The Kingdom. King Ezekiel rallied to become the leader his people need and with a little help from Nabila, The Kingdom managed to stand their ground.

Over at The Hilltop, Maggie sent a strong message to The Saviors by executing one of The Saviors that are being held prisoner and delivering the body to Simon with a message that if The Saviors don’t stand down she’ll kill the rest.

But most of the action last night happened in Alexandria. Negan and The Saviors burned most of Alexandria to the ground, including Father Gabriel’s church. But the people of Alexandria managed to escape thanks to the quick thinking and leadership of Carl Grimes.

Carl faced off with Negan and showed the kind of leadership that Rick would have been proud of. He offered to let Negan kill him if it meant saving the people of Alexandria. Carl gave a Rick -worthy speech trying to stall Negan long enough for the people to get out. And it worked.

But at the end of the episode fans found out why Carl had volunteered to die. When he and Siddiq were fighting walkers in the forest Carl was bitten. By the time that Rick and Michonne found Carl and the others hiding in the sewer tunnels Carl was starting to show the effects of the bite. He revealed the bite to his father and Michonne and fans were shocked by Carl’s impending death.
