There will always be some debate over what the top moments on The Walking Dead are, but one of the most powerful is when Rick Grimes first woke from his coma in the series premiere of the AMC Drama.

In the hospital recovering from being shot during a police chase, Rick wakes up to emptiness. There is nobody else in his hospital room. There is no sound of medical personnel nearby. The clock is stuck at 2:17 and 37 seconds as he looks at the wilted flowers by his bedside.

Rick is still hooked up to the machines that were keeping him stable. Bandages covered his wounds as he slowly came to his senses from his comatose state and gradually rolled onto his side in preparation of standing on his own.

When Rick does attempt to get to his feet, he can’t yet stand on his own. Grabbing the IV stand wasn’t enough to keep him up, as he crashed to the ground by the side of his hospital bed, rolling and ripping the medical equipment off his body.

Still trembling, he worked to make his way to his feet and made his way to the sink to get a drink of water. Leaving his room, he stumbled down the empty hallway, eventually finding the now iconic hospital doors with the words “Don’t open, dead inside” written on them.
