Love him or hate him, Negan is a larger than life character who operates by his own moral code. When Carl finds himself at the Sanctuary he arrives with a bang, shooting several members of Negan’s gang. Normally this would mean certain death, but Negan is fascinated by Carl and takes an active interest in him.

Negan takes Carl on a tour of the Sanctuary to show him how the people who live there fall in line. They have a heart to heart conversation about breaking balls and being tough. Negan wants to see Carl’s eye and he’s delighted to see how awful it looks. He thinks Carl should wear it as a badge of honor.

Despite the moments of levity and the genuine sympathy Negan has after learning that Carl had to put down his own mother, Negan decides that Carl must be punished for his actions and he makes Carl sing him a song. It’s humiliating, but as soon as it’s over Negan moves on. Carl, however, doesn’t forget.
