“Say Yes” was a fun episode that explored Rick and Michonne’s relationship. But at the heart of the episode was the solidification of their relationship. Over their meal the couple started talking about the future. It’s always a challenge to think about the future in the middle of such dire circumstances. Not only are they living and raising a family in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, but they are also facing life under Negan and the Saviors.

Rick reveals that he would like to take a step back from being in charge. It’s time. He knows that something big will have to happen to defeat the Saviors but he doesn’t see himself being in charge beyond that. Someone else can step up and take the lead.

It wasn’t until they thought the other had been killed in a Walker attack that they realized that life without each other would be unbearable. Seeing Rick and Michonne torn apart thinking the other had died showed us that their love is real.
