Rick had a lot to figure out after waking up in that hospital room and thankfully he came upon a nice man named Morgan who could help him figure everything out. Morgan told Rick about his wife and how, as a Walker, she came to their door every night. In the early days of the show it looked liked this particular Walker knew where she was and she wanted to be back with her family.

This was an emotional moment for the young show because it was a sign that the world was indeed falling apart. A husband and son were forced to watch as wife and mother succumbed to the undead and trolled their house. Not only was it hard to watch, but knowing that she would be merciless if she caught them was particularly troubling as well.

Rick had to face the harsh reality that the same fate had befallen his own wife, and possibly his son. Seeing Morgan dealing with his son and his dead wife put the human face on this zombie apocalypse, one that would continue to follow the survivors for seasons to come.
