Rick tries his best, but occasionally he does make mistakes. Deciding to slaughter The Saviors at the outpost in order to get food and supplies from The Hilltop was a mistake that Rick will regret always. It was the first time the group ever went on the offensive. And it was the first time they attacked people who really had no idea who they were. They entered a fight that wasn’t theirs solely as a means to get the food they needed to survive.
But tragically Rick’s usually spot on planning and caution abandoned him in this case. With almost no preparation, no reconnaissance, and no idea that the outpost was just one of many strongholds that The Saviors occupied Rick led the others on a murder spree.
The ramifications of that decision would eventually lead directly to the deaths of Abraham and Glenn. And set in motion the events that have led up to All Out War. Now Rick and the others have to beat Negan and The Saviors in order to have any hope of building a society or having any kind of life that doesn’t involve servitude to The Saviors.
Rick has always been committed to doing whatever it takes to keep his family alive. But in this case his decision ended up getting two members of his family killed. Winning All Out War won’t make up for that. But at least it will give Maggie and Glenn’s child a chance to grow up in a relatively safe place.
