30. Eugene Corrects a Wrong

Despite the constant threat of being killed by Negan, Eugene makes a huge decision in the season 8 midseason finale. Father Gabriel is sick and it’s unclear what’s wrong with him. Dr. Carson, the spare Dr. Carson, has been treating him and Gabriel implores Eugene to help him return the doctor to the Hilltop for Maggie’s sake.

Eugene, at this point, is working for Negan and the only transgressions he has so far is that he slipped the suicide pill to Sasha and he didn’t reveal Dwight as the traitor. But he’s not planning to leave the relative safety of the Sanctuary…though he’s willing to look the other way with Gabriel and Carson.

After their heart to heart Eugene come to the decision that he won’t “help” them escape but he will look the other way. He sets things up to help them leave the Sanctuary, even leaving a car nearby with the keys left on the floor of the infirmary to help them speed away.

While Eugene is still firmly one with the “We are Negan” mission, it’s also clear that he wants to help his former traveling companions when he’s able.
