12. Maggie’s Speech To Rick About Glenn

Episode 716 “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life”

Original Airdate: 4/2/2017

There have been a lot of speeches in The Walking Dead. And many of them have been pretty memorable and inspiring. But the speech that Maggie delivered in a voiceover at the end of the season finale in season 6 has to be the best speech so far on The Walking Dead.

In one speech Maggie delivered a touching tribute to Glenn, a reminder of everything that the group had gone through together since the farm, and a badly needed note of hope. It was exactly what the fans needed after such a brutal and emotional season. And since the season opened with the horrifying deaths of Glenn and Abe it was exactly right to end the season with a tribute to them and to Sasha.

It also was important that Maggie was the one to deliver the finale speech. Making speeches is pretty much Rick’s thing. And as the leader of the core group of survivors and the leader of Alexandria he gets lots of opportunities to make speeches. Maggie giving the speech symbolized a shift in power. She is poised to become the leader at The Hilltop and an ally for Rick and Alexandria.

The core group of survivors that fans have loved so much over the last 7 seasons is growing and changing and shifting to allow others in. And that has to happen in order for the story to move forward. But with Maggie at The Hilltop and Carol at The Kingdom it feels like a little bit like when a loved one leaves home. Maggie’s speech was an emotional callback to the journey that the characters, and the fans, have gone on so far. And it set just the right inspirational note for All Out War.
