Fans of The Walking Dead got an advanced look at the mural about to show up somewhere in Brooklyn to celebrate the second half of season 8.

There’s a new billboard coming to Brooklyn on January 22 to celebrate the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead and Entertainment Weekly gave us a sneak peek.

The billboard was created as part of the marketing plan for The Walking Dead’s mid-season premiere on February 25. Executive Director Greg Nicotero told EW’s Dalton Ross that he grew up a fan of movie posters and their respective artists, so it made sense to look for something iconic and stylized to visually represent the second half of season 8. “We wanted to bring back some of that style and flair in this piece by telling our story in a painting as opposed to just a photo collage.”

Ultimately, Nicotero called upon Christopher Sly to create the mural, and he nailed it.

Take a look at the billboard for yourself:

As you can see, the painted mural is much more visceral than a simple photo collage, capturing the grit and despair of season 8. Most interestingly, though, is the tagline: “My mercy prevails over my wrath.” Recall that the season 8 premiere episode was titled “Mercy” and in the middle of All Out War we have seen several examples of mercy: Jesus saving Savior POWs and Carl helping Saddiq to name a few.

Scott M. Gimple said in an interview that Carl’s death is going to shape the rest of season 8, and we already know that Carl wants his father to find the better path in this war. Could this mural be foreshadowing Carl’s message to Rick?
