The man behind Tesla and Space X started selling flamethrowers and Chandler Riggs bought one. But could a flamethrower help against zombies?

Elon Musk’s sale pitch was clear: His Boring Company’s $500 flamethrower would be perfect in a fight against zombie hordes. The sales pitch (and the fact that these flamethrowers look kind of cool) was enough for people to start throwing their money in the pre-sale line. Even Chandler Riggs got in on the action and bought one. Whether or not Musk actually thinks these things are a good idea aside, we have to wonder whether or not a flamethrower could actually help fight Walkers.

The short answer: Probably not.

Take a look at Elon Musk in action with his flamethrower:

He also promises he’s not trying to spike sales by creating a zombie apocalypse, for what it’s worth:

In order to be sold legally, the flamethrowers can only have a maximum ten inch flame. That said, in the world of The Walking Dead you’re not going to be torching the undead from afar, which means you’d have to be up close in order to hurt them. You also must consider if setting Walkers on fire is a good idea in the first place, because a smoldering Walker could set fire to your immediate area, and there is no post-apocalyptic fire department.

Nevertheless, Chandler Riggs put in his order for one of the high-end flamethrowers:

Anyone who plays video games will appreciate the flamethrower’s design. It looks like a cross between a Stormtrooper’s weapon and a souped-up paintball gun. It’s hard to tell what you’d even use something like that for in real life, let alone having the need to own one…but hey, to each his own. I’d like to think someone out there is going to melt snow with it instead of shoveling it, and more power to you. That’s about the most practical thing I can think to use it for. (That, and maybe roasting marshmallows)

As of Sunday, there have been over 4000 pre-orders for the flamethrowers with the number increasing by the day.

If any of our readers bought flamethrowers, I’m really hoping to hear from you. I would love to know what made you buy it and what you’re planning to use it for!
