Eugene might consider himself to be Negan on The Walking Dead, but his life is in the balance at all times and his loyalties are tested on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis.

When AMC released the official synopsis of the second half of season 8 of The Walking Dead it noted that Eugene finds himself in a sticky situation at the Sanctuary. Though Eugene has pledged fealty to Negan, he never truly seems to be safe and that’s an ongoing theme for the guy with the strong hair game.

Here’s what AMC has to say about where Eugene finds himself in the back end of season 8:

“Having gifted the Saviors a major victory, Eugene’s loyalty is repeatedly tested as new obstacles present themselves.”

If we had to make a list of the things Eugene has done over the course of being captured by the Saviors, it would look something like this:

  • Eugene fortified the Sanctuary’s fences
  • He manufactured the pill that eventually killed Sasha, so he was partly responsible for what happened when she died
  • Eugene figured out that Dwight was the one who betrayed Negan but didn’t turn him in
  • Eugene gave Father Gabriel the means to escape with Dr. Carson so that the doctor could return to the Hilltop
  • He figured out the way to get the Walkers away from the Sanctuary, thus allowing the Saviors a way out.

There are other things that he has done while at the Sanctuary, but even with this short list a pattern emerges. Eugene is loyal to Negan, but he has some lingering feelings for his old friends. He couldn’t sleep until he helped Father Gabriel and Dr. Carson escape. Eugene knows that he’s walking a fine line because Negan is always telling him that he has to prove himself, and yet he still puts himself out there by helping his friends.

Based on what we know about season 8B, Eugene will be the least of Negan’s concerns upon the show’s return. On the one hand, Negan has bigger problems with the other lieutenants so Eugene might not have as much heat on him as he did before, but on the other hand he might have more heat than ever before as Negan tries to sort out his inner circle.

No matter what, it is clear that Eugene must continue to prove that he’s loyal to Negan and that’s no easy task.

The Walking Dead returns February 25 at 9pm on AMC.
