Who earned the title of Power Pair for The Walking Dead episode 811?

A lot of folks are on the move in the latest episode of The Walking Dead titled ‘Dead or Alive Or’. The Alexandrians are trying to make their way to Hilltop undetected, even if that means going through a swamp.

An ailing Father Gabriel and Dr. Carson are also trying to reach Hilltop when their vehicle stalls. Negan moves Eugene to a new outpost devoted to manufacturing ammunition.

Meanwhile, Carol and Morgan mince words over how to best help Henry in the aftermath of killing Gavin. And Maggie struggles with limited resources as Alden tries to convince her to give the prisoners some respite from the pen.

During all this activity, we find some characters deep in conversation, some threatening another, and others facing walkers and bear traps. So, which pairing had the most significant impact this week? Let’s take a look at the contenders.

Contenders: Eugene and Negan

Eugene escapes blame for Father Gabriel and Dr. Carson’s escape when Gabriel returns saying it was the late doctor’s fault. But Negan is still keeping a close eye on Eugene and not so subtly questioning his loyalties.

The conversation escalates when Negan is not satisfied with the rate at which Eugene can produce ammunition. When Eugene suggests catapulting walker parts over the fence, Negan takes the idea even further. It would appear that Negan is planning his own rendition of biological warfare using walker guts.

Contenders: Father Gabriel and Dr. Carson

Father Gabriel and Dr. Carson share quite a bit of screen time this week. Father Gabriel’s eyesight is deteriorating from the infection and Dr. Carson sees no way to get him to Hilltop in time. Their vehicle will not start.

The pair stumbles upon a house full of surprises – antibiotics, bear traps, car keys, and a map. Carson does not initially embrace Gabriel’s adherence to faith, saying the house “does not scream of salvation”. Interestingly, while it might seem that the antibiotics and car could turn out to be their salvation, it was “Saviors” who showed up disrupting their escape and ultimately killing Dr. Carson.

One might say they were indeed saved, just not the way they wanted to be.

Contenders: Carol and Morgan

Carol and Morgan both care about Henry but do not agree on how to best care for him. Henry is clearly traumatized after fatally stabbing Gavin.

Henry seems intent on finding out which Savior killed his brother Benjamin. Carol swiftly sends Benjamin away and protests the idea of Henry learning that Jared shot Benjamin.

Ultimately, Morgan decides to tell Henry that it was Gavin so the youngster can put this behind him. Carol agrees with Morgan’s decision.

Carol and Morgan are frequently at odds over ideology, but I believe they respect and value one another’s opinion. And sometimes they actually end up meeting in the middle!

Power Pair

Tara is clearly not agreeable to keeping Dwight around to help in defeating Negan. She is still painfully aware that Dwight is the reason Denise is no longer here.

While Daryl, Rosita, and Scott attempt to clear the swamp for safe passage, Tara decides to stay behind to watch over the rest of the group. She then lures Dwight away from the group under the premise of taking out a walker.

Alone in the woods, Tara threatens to kill Dwight. Dwight pleads his case and tells Tara how sorry he is about Denise. Suddenly, the two are stopped in their tracks by the voice of Saviors out searching for the Alexandrians.

Then, in order to keep the Saviors from heading in to the woods toward the swamp, Dwight chooses to pop out of the woods as if he has been out on his own this whole time trying to find his way back.

Actually, Dwight takes a grave risk in trying to help the Alexandrians avoid discovery. When Dwight makes the decision to reveal himself, he has no idea that fellow Savior Laura has not returned to rat him out. However, it turns out that Laura is unaccounted for and Dwight rejoins the Saviors nudging them in a different direction away from the Alexandrians.

I see this as a very pivotal move in the war. We now have Dwight back inside the Saviors’ good graces but acting on behalf of Rick’s group. This creates an interesting dynamic and provides additional inside information. I am anxious to see how the charade plays out, hopefully in favor of everyone gathered at Hilltop.
