After Tara set Dwight up for a massive fall on The Walking Dead, Dwight now has a chance for redemption if he continues to play his cards right.

Dwight got a raw deal when it looked like he was back in line with the Saviors on The Walking Dead. He never would have been in that situation if not for Tara’s rage-filled vendetta against the former Savior, but after trying to kill him she unknowingly forced him right into the enemy’s hands.

With Laura still out there somewhere, Dwight is currently enjoying a respite from being the turncoat that is really is. No one knows he was the one who betrayed the Saviors (aside from Eugene, who isn’t around at this point), and with Negan out of the way, Dwight has essentially become Simon’s right hand.

Dwight’s no dummy when it comes to people like Simon. Though his anger is directed at Negan for stealing his wife and ironing his face, Dwight knows the dangers associated with people like Simon and he also knows that his life will be over when Simon learns about the betrayal.

This is where Dwight has the upper hand.

Simon trusts Dwight, as Negan did, but unlike Negan, Simon doesn’t have universal appeal among the Saviors and the workers. People at the Sanctuary would be upset to lose Negan, while Simon’s death would barely register by comparison.

So what if Dwight killed Simon? Dwight can leverage his newfound position with Simon and take advantage of him before more people die. If Dwight kills him in the right moment, he can send a message, once and for all, that he’s definitely not Team Negan or Team Savior anymore.

Dwight knows full well that Tara and Daryl want him dead. He has no guarantee that he’ll live past the end of the battle, so why not go out as a hero? Killing Simon would not only rid the world of one of the worst villains we’ve ever seen on The Walking Dead, but killing him at an opportune moment could give Team Rick the edge they need to win.
