Which duo earned the title of Power Pair in The Walking Dead episode 814 ‘Still Gotta Mean Something’?

There were quite a few pairings in the latest episode of The Walking Dead. We had heart to heart talks, brutal confrontations, and even a reunion. Let’s take a look at the contenders for the latest Power Pair title.

Contenders: Rick and Alden

Alden and Rick share a talk at Hilltop before Rick leaves to hunt down the escaped Saviors. Alden offers up intel which might lead Rick to the prisoners on the run.

Alden also makes a suggestion, perhaps a plea, to Rick that he bring the Saviors back to Hilltop and give them a chance at redemption. Rick takes Alden’s words under advisement, but certainly not very enthusiastically.

Rick does end up using Alden’s idea. However, he uses Alden’s words of reconciliation against the Saviors rather than for them. Upon capture by the escaped Saviors, Rick outright lies, giving the Saviors his “word” that he will bring them back to Hilltop if they release Morgan and him and cooperate.

When walkers ascend upon the location, some of the Saviors are swayed to believe Rick and release them so Rick and Morgan can help battle the walkers.

Rick’s word is about as good as the loogie Gary bestows upon Jadis, that is to say, not very good at all. Rick takes out some walkers but also takes out the Saviors as well. Remember what the Governor said at the prison? Liar!

Contenders: Morgan and his inner dialogue

Morgan talks to Carol. Morgan talks to Rick. But it’s really Morgan talking to himself. He continues to battle his own demons in his head.

He tells Carol he does not save people. He claims he watches them die. Despite Carol making a very valid argument that Morgan saved her after she left Alexandria, he refuses to accept it.

Rick reminds Morgan that he saved him in the beginning as well. Yet again, Morgan refuses to believe he can save people. Morgan’s logic often seems nonsensical. That is why I think he is really arguing more with something inside his own head rather than the people actually in front of him.

Contenders: Jadis and Negan

Jadis brings Negan back to the trash compound. She seems to have developed a plan to torture him by burning Lucille and then making a quick escape on the mysterious helicopter.

Her plans are foiled when Negan is able to reach her suitcase and grab a gun. Somehow he also acquires a flare and threatens to burn photo memories of her fallen comrades.

Jadis pleads with Negan to not burn the pictures. Negan reveals that Lucille is named after his wife, presumably in hopes of appealing to her humanity. Jadis hears the helicopter approaching and rushes Negan with her walker cart.

Negan fires at the walker. Jadis throws herself on Negan and grabs the flare, which falls into a puddle and is extinguished along with Jadis’ hopes of signaling the helicopter.

Jadis threatens Lucille with a second flare. Again, Negan begs her not to destroy the bat. She says she wants to hurt him. Negan reminds her that he did not annihilate her community. It was Simon and Negan promises to settle the score.

Somehow this is enough for Jadis and she allows Negan to leave with Lucille unscathed.

Contenders: Morgan and Jared

Morgan comes face to face with Jared. They fight with Jared almost stabbing Morgan through the neck with this stick. But the tables turn when Morgan kicks Jared away from him and traps him behind a sliding gate. Morgan grasps Jared and holds him against the gate as walkers ascend upon Jared. Jared begs Morgan to let him go. Morgan does not let go.

And let’s just say that not getting that sandwich he wanted is not the worst thing that happens to Jared in the episode. Benjamin’s murder is avenged.

Power Pair

The Power Pair was a more sentimental choice for me this week. I recognize that others may have a completely different choice based on their own reasoning. That’s the real power of the pair. Everyone can make their own choice!

Maybe it is because I am a mom. Who knows? But I chose the reunion of Carol and Henry as this week’s Power Pair.

Both characters seemed to learn something from the experience. Carol learns that Henry is more capable than she wanted to believe. She also learned that the risk of losing him was not worth as much as the possibility of finding him.

Henry learns that he should not just go rogue and ignore the advice of those who care for him. I suspect he was also reminded that even after losing so many he loved, he still wants to be loved.

I cannot help but be moved by seeing Henry huddled inside the bank of the creek just like Sophia (and real life sister Madison!) was so many seasons ago.

I am hoping that this experience helps Carol come full circle showing her that fighting for those you love is indeed a risky but worthy initiative.
