The penultimate episode of The Walking Dead season 8 had shifting alliances, surprise attacks, and more. Which pair, good or bad, made the biggest impression in ‘Worth’?

The survivors are still waging war, but things are getting extra prickly now that some folks have taken matters into their own hands. Simon attempts to take over at the Sanctuary even though Negan is back in town. Daryl and Rosita capture Eugene for a brief spell. And Aaron continues to stand his ground (more like falls to the ground) at Oceanside.

A series of letters from dearly departed Carl may also be changing some perspectives, for better or worse. Rick remains calm, yet tearful, while reading his letter from Carl. Negan, however, becomes enraged after hearing his letter read by Michonne.

Let’s take a look at this week’s Power Pair contenders.

Mac ‘n Cheese and Sardines

Even with the addition of garlic, this dish does not sound very palatable. Who knew this pairing could get even grosser than it sounds?

It does just that, however, when Eugene gags himself and spews said recipe all over Rosita in an attempt to escape his captors. The distraction is just long enough for Eugene to get ahead of a couple of walkers that Rosita must battle before following Eugene. The rest is history as Eugene escapes “Rosaryl” and ends up back at his outpost.

Simon and Gregory

These two guys always bring some entertaining dialogue and memorable enunciation to the table.

Gregory cries foul when he thinks Simon is going to send him away. He implores Simon to keep him around for his political prowess and ability to allocate resources. (I am certain I do not need to remind you that Gregory has a poor history with both of these objectives).

It turns out all Simon needs from Gregory is a good cup of coffee. It’s too bad (for Simon) that he will never get to find out if Gregory is indeed a skilled barista.

Negan and Simon

While Negan is running the long con with Dwight, he berates Simon for disobeying his orders with the Scavengers. However, he tells Simon he forgives him.

It is when Simon again attempts to usurp his throne that Negan decides to end Simon. He challenges him to a traditional brawl. Simon loses the fight and ends up on the pole, walker style.

Negan and Dwight

While Negan was a little more direct with Simon, he plays Dwight like a fiddle throughout the whole episode – that is until he reveals that Laura is home. Negan does not like to be made a fool, so this does not bode well for Dwight.

Many fans suspected that it was Laura whom Negan picked up at the end of episode 814. This suspicion made the conversations between Negan and Dwight extra chilling and anxiety-ridden. Seeing Dwight appear to flip sides throughout the episode was an impressive yet futile feat.

And this week  . . .

I guess I am feeling extra sentimental these days.

I decided to award this week’s Power Pair title to Rick and Carl’s letter. Hearing Carl’s voice conjure up so many sweet, innocent memories in the midst of war was a welcome contrast.

I enjoyed seeing Jerry carrying baby Grace and Michonne holding hands with Judith. While it may just be a few fleeting moments of peace and happiness, it was a breath of fresh air.

The letter clearly touched Rick deeply, but we still cannot be certain of how it will affect his actions going forward. I can only hope it keeps Rick from becoming someone he never really wanted to be.
