It’s hard to review the new season of Fear the Walking Dead without spoiling it because season 4 IS GOING TO BE AMAZING. That said, read on for some spoiler-free thoughts!

Every now and then a spinoff is able to surpass the original show and do something so different and unexpected that in many ways it’s better than its predecessor. Such is the case with Fear the Walking Dead season 4. I’ve seen the first two episodes and there’s no way I can adequately explain how awesome they are without spoiling anything. What I can tell you is that it has been a very long time since I’ve been this excited about a television show and I think you’re going to want to watch. This season changes everything we knew about Fear the Walking Dead.

I know what you might be thinking. You gave Fear the Walking Dead a shot early on. You might have tuned in from the start, like me, and wondered when the action was going to pick up. You might have been wondering where things were going in season 2. Season 3 was a lot better and it offered a bright future for the show…and then the season finale came and threw all the cards up in the air.

I know. I was right there with you.

With new showrunners Ian Goldberg and Andrew Chambliss at the helm, Fear the Walking Dead season 4 is an entirely new beast. And that’s a good thing. It’s so new and different it’s like watching a spinoff of the same show with a few of the original characters and a handful of intriguing newcomers. Oh yeah, and there’s that big crossover happening, too.

Whereas Fear was once fragmented, this new iteration of the show is cohesive and smart. The new characters are likable and they draw you in as soon as they appear. I want to know everything about them and I want to see how they fit into the story, and the original characters that survived season 3 are much different than they were when last we saw them. It’s refreshing. The theme of family is paramount to season 4, and it’s something that will continue deep into the new season.

Trust me when I tell you that no matter where you were with the show before, you can start watching 401 on April 15 and it won’t matter how much you have or haven’t seen leading up to the new season. It’s that different. I will say that for the sake of understanding the journey, watching the first three seasons will give you a keen insight into why season 4 is so very different.
