The good stuff

  1. John is a really cool character. I sat looking at my computer screen for a while trying to figure out the word to describe John. I eventually settled on ‘cool’. And he really is cool. His gunslinging ways, friendly nature, and straightforward way of living make him a fun and interesting character.
  2. A new group of bad guys. It’s always great to have villains. As if surviving a zombie apocalypse isn’t hard enough, adding other humans fighting for supplies to the mix makes it even more dramatic. Now we just need to learn more about them in order to determine how much of baddies they really are.
  3. Al is someone we’ve never seen. Althea drives a SWAT truck, has tons of weapons, plenty of food, and can kick butt. But her curious nature is what sets her apart and her desire to hear the stories of other survivors makes her extremely intriguing going forward. And she sure knows how to make a first impression.
  4. The contrast between the three new characters. Morgan with his staff, John with the pistol, and Al with the heavy machinery seem like a group that wouldn’t work well together at all, but they play well off each other and have a great on-screen chemistry.
  5. A unique feel. The way the episode was shot was both interesting and fun. It was a lot darker and grittier in its presentation than previous episodes of the show. One concern is that this show would just be like another TWD…but that shouldn’t be an issue with how great this part of the story was.
