Fear The Walking Dead, Another Day In The Diamond: Things To Note
By Liam O'Leary
14) The Vultures’ tactic of using music to collect infected is reminiscent of another animal-named group: The Wolves.
15) If my count of the infected The Vultures collected is correct, then the flags they leave behind is a marker of how many they’ve amassed in particular area. They place a ’12’ flag on a truck, which roughly matches the number they gathered inside. This also means that they gathered 457 infected in the tanks at the refinery camp, likely the population of the whole town.
16) Mel calls the infected “The Fallen”, the ninth unique term for the dead in Fear The Walking Dead.
17) Mel’s approach seems like a weird combination of The Saviors and The Scavengers. He attempts to convince Madison to give up the group’s possessions, like The Saviors, but, seems content with simply collecting them after a group dies, similar to Jadis’ “We take, we don’t bother” philosophy.
18) Mel is played by Kevin Zegers, who played Terry, a security guard, in the 2004 remake of Dawn Of The Dead. He is the third actor to have appeared in a zombie movie prior to appearing in Fear The Walking Dead. The previous two were Sandrine Holt, who played Dr. Exner in Season One, as well as Terry Morales, an aspiring reporter, in Resident Evil: Apocalypse (Coincidentally also released in 2004) and Brett Rickaby, who played Marcus, the first infected in the Flight 462 webisodes as well Bill Farnum, again the first zombie, in 2010’s The Crazies.
19) Charlie being a spy for The Vultures may be a reference to fan theories during Season Six of The Walking Dead that Enid was a spy for The Wolves or The Saviors.
20) In a nice bit of symbolism, the morning after The Vultures’ arrival, a group of vultures are shown hovering over the ballpark.
21) While Nick, Alicia, Strand, and Luciana call Mel’s group “The Vultures”, neither Mel, nor any of his group, refer to themselves as such.
22) The song “Mama Tried” plays as the group realizes their situation is deteriorating. Considering the community is Madison’s creation, it’s quite ironic.
23) The fact Alicia seems so angry at The Vultures (Combined with the state of the refinery camp) raises the question of whether or not Mel was telling the truth about his approach, or if he decided to…accelerate the process.
24) What happened to Cole, Viv, and Douglas? Did they survive?
