The traumatic ending to the latest episode of Fear The Walking Dead has reminded us of one thing: In a zombie apocalypse, ALWAYS watch your back.

I feel like I say this pretty frequently, but, if so, it’s because it bears repeating: Surviving a zombie apocalypse is easier if you’re in a group.

Why? Well, if you want, I could go into a lengthy diatribe about how humanity is a social animal, that we have always been social animals, going back to humanity’s beginnings, that we’re stronger together than apart, etc., but, really, it boils down to one thing: Your back always needs watching.

I mean, I don’t even think I need to elaborate on the primary reason why, do I?

It won’t take a genius to realize that zombies will outnumber us. They can spread so quickly, a whole city might get overrun in days.

Of course, that ability to spread means that it only takes one to come up behind you to spell trouble. Naturally, having a second person with you means they can warn you to things you can’t see, and vice versa.

But, allow me to elaborate further on the necessity of watching your back in a zombie apocalypse.

You see, while the dead can sneak up you, technically, they won’t be nearly as good at it as people.

Our ability to run, use weapons, hide, actually sneak, mean one poorly timed lapse of focus can result in a knife in your back.

If you make enemies in the apocalypse, that increases the likelihood someone will be wanting to place that knife in your back. Honestly, though…even if you don’t, there’ll be opportunists and killers out there looking to do it, anyway.

Let’s go back to that whole “lapse of focus” thing I mentioned earlier for a minute.

You can’t afford to lose focus in a zombie apocalypse. What if some trigger-happy hostile, or, hell, just a jumpy fellow survivor, sees you while you’re off in dreamland? What do you think will happen to you? I’ll tell you: You’ll get shot.

Am I saying you must be in a constant state of alertness? I hate saying it, but, I feel like I have to: If you’re somewhere where zombies or hostiles can get you…yes.

This brings me back to our discussion about being in a group.

As alert as we can be, it can be nearly impossible to be alert all the time, we need someone to help us carry the load.

Having another person with us can be the best defense against sneak attacks. When the stress of having to be on guard all the time starts getting to us, that other person can be our eyes.

I know I said I wouldn’t go on a diatribe about it, and I wont, but, the fact remains: We are stronger together.

The important thing you need to remember, though? Whether it’s us who do it ourselves, or whether we have help doing it, the fact remains: It’s dangerous in a zombie apocalypse, and you always need to watch your back.

This is why you follow…The Rules.
