Fear the Walking Dead 403: Four to Fear
By Jamie Brewer
Details of past events at the diamond are slowly starting to emerge on Fear the Walking Dead. Unfortunately, in the present, the Clark family has suffered a devastating loss raising more questions about what actually happened.
Episode 403 was a good example of how quickly things can change on a show like Fear the Walking Dead. Last week, Nick was one of our “Four to Fear”, and for good reason. As soon as he spotted Ennis’ car, he did not give up until he had found him and killed him. Unfortunately, a familiar but entirely unexpected danger would emerge to settle the score, removing Nick as a threat and earning her own place on this week’s fear list:
4. Charlie
Charlie’s threat level escalated quickly. In episode 402 it was revealed that she had been passing secrets to Mel under the guise of being separated from her parents. While Madison was out searching for a fictional lost family, Charlie was secretly providing the Vultures with valuable intel.
That was the past. In the present, she shot and killed Nick as he sat on a step, clutching a flower. Flashbacks suggest that Nick had been trying to persuade her to live under their protection in the stadium, but for reasons unknown, Charlie refused.
Nick had pursued and killed Ennis, also for reasons unknown. In episode 402, Mel suggested that Ennis was essentially Charlie’s guardian, having found her at one of the other sites they had attacked. We don’t know much else.
It’s reasonable to assume that Charlie killed Nick to avenge Ennis and that, for now, she poses a similar threat to Alicia and the rest of her group.
3. Morgan
Morgan made the assertion on The Walking Dead that he doesn’t die, bearing a burden to witness death over and over again. All out war in Virginia drove him to self-exile and eventually months of travel to get as far away from the people he cared for as possible. Unfortunately, the grass in Texas was no greener. Morgan’s first meaningful contact with other survivors has resulted in more of the same. Despite making a connection with Nick, he could not stop him from succumbing to his rage and killing Ennis. Not long after, he would also witness Nick’s tragic demise.
Morgan’s cycle of losing control following the loss of those around him puts even perceived threats in grave danger. Morgan is an expert killer when his filter is switched off and in this latest state of emergency, those familiar instincts could easily take over.
2. Althea
In the early moments of “Good Out Here”, Althea is able to effortlessly turn the tables on Alicia and company by overpowering Nick and taking him hostage. What’s interesting about Althea is the more we learn about her the less we actually know. She has a talent for coaxing backstories out of people she meets without revealing a thing about herself. And her only disclosure, that she used to be a journalist, seems dubious considering the arsenal of weapons she commands and her combat abilities.

Before retaking the S.W.A.T. van, she also revealed that she had escaped similar captures many times. Whether these similar predicaments occurred before or after the apocalypse, and for what reasons, remains unknown (for now at least). Althea may seem like she’s on the right side, but she’s also far more dangerous than she’s been letting on.
1. Alicia
From the beginning, the Clark family has struggled to survive together. Despite Madison’s efforts to keep them united, the Clarks spent the better part of the first 3 seasons drifting apart. Their reunion after the dam explosion was different though. Madison, Nick, and Alicia chose to start a new life in the diamond, and they were building it together – as a family.
In the present, Alicia must now contend with her grief over the loss of her brother. There’s also an ominous absence of detail regarding Madison’s whereabouts that may have been revealed by Nick’s intense anger towards Ennis.
If The Vultures have done something to Madison, it may be that Alicia is the only Clark left. That may be a stretch given how early it is in the season, but if Alicia believes that she has nothing left to lose, she might end up losing herself.
