This weekend Prince Harry married Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle would make an ideal shelter in the apocalypse.

There’s nothing like a royal wedding to get you thinking about the apocalypse. Seeing Windsor Castle all decked out for the Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was like something out of a fairytale, to be sure, but for those of us watching from outside of the UK – and for fans of the Walking Dead universe – Windsor Castle would make an ideal place to hunker down in the middle of the apocalypse.

The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead have tons of fans who hail from the UK. The UK branch of the TWD Family certainly has an advantage over the US fans when it comes to apocalyptic preparation. Castles like the one in Windsor are the perfect place to go during an apocalypse, but be warned that they might get a little crowded as everyone else tries to get in.

Those of us who watched the Royal Wedding today were treated to an inside look at Windsor Castle. Built in the 11th century, the castle has withstood all kinds of sieges and attacks over the years. Windsor Castle is the oldest castle in Europe that is still is use today, as Queen Elizabeth spends her weekends in Windsor.

In terms of design, Windsor Castle is a vast 13-acre complex made up of a fortified palace and small town. Inside the walls are apartments and towers arranged around central courtyards. Needless to say, with the right planning and preparation this medieval compound could regain its past glory as a bastion of safety should the zombie apocalypse arrive.

While we don’t have castles in the United States, a ballpark or stadium is about the closest thing we have to the medieval castles in Europe in terms of design and function. Over the course of season 4 of Fear the Walking Dead we have watched as Madison and her family build a community in a baseball stadium. In looking at the stadium’s design, it makes perfect sense to try to build a shelter in a ballpark. The park is surrounded by a large defensible space (the parking lot) and a strong fence that circles the entire park. Inside, the stadium wraps around the field, which has been converted into a garden and pasture. It works because it’s nice and enclosed, and the views offer a look at any threats that might be approaching.

Both castles and ballparks offer defensible spaces and places to grow crops, as well as residences, even if (in the case of the ballpark) they weren’t originally designed for that purpose. After getting an up-close look during the wedding, we have to admit that taking refuge in Windsor Castle wouldn’t be a bad thing in an apocalypse.
