I KNOW that a zombie apocalypse won’t happen. But, I believe it pays to be ready for one. Like they said in this week’s Fear The Walking Dead, just in case.

When I first wrote The Rules: A Guide To Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse , I wrote it knowing that a zombie apocalypse won’t happen, but, that I wanted people to be ready for one…just in case.

Well, it seems like great minds think alike, as this week’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead wasn’t just themed on that phrase, but titled “Just In Case”,too.

This makes this week kind of easy for me, because we’re going to focus on why it’s important to prepare for a zombie apocalypse (And the disasters you might experience in one), just in case.

Let’s start with something basic: Why you should prepare for a zombie apocalypse.

I could simply repeat “just in case” again and be done with it, but, I wanted to give you something to think about first.

While the idea of the dead reanimating and trying to eat people is ridiculous, things that aren’t ridiculous are diseases like Rabies, brain parasites like toxoplasma gondii (Which infect rats and cats), and drugs like “bath salts”. These things can all replicate symptoms that we traditionally associate with zombies: Manic, violent behavior, inability to control one’s actions, and cannibalism.

While relatively rare, the fact remains, these sorts of things are out there, and, if through a warped act of science or bad luck of nature they could become more commonplace or resilient to medicine, spread to humans, or become unnaturally replicated, suddenly, the idea of zombie apocalypse becomes a lot less far-fetched.

Even if it doesn’t happen, what could it hurt to be at least slightly prepared in the event it did?

Of course, that wasn’t the point, necessarily, of Sunday’s Fear, as, obviously, it took place long after the outbreak began.

No, the point of Sunday’s Fear was that, in general, people need to be ready in the event things unexpectedly go bad.

And, boy, can things go bad and go bad quickly.

Look at Naomi’s old group, for example. After covering up her daughter’s illness, Naomi left to find her antibiotics. Within the first night she was gone, her daughter turned, and, by the time she returned two days later, her group was decimated.

You see, disaster can strike that fast in a zombie apocalypse. All it takes is one person to turn and your group not know it, for everything to unravel. They can start biting people, those people can turn, chaos and confusion ensue and before you know, you’re overrun.

You need to have a plan, a contingency in case everything goes to shit and you have to escape and start anew. You need to have supplies, weapons, food, a vehicle, an escape route, and idea of where you’ll go. While you hope never to have to use them, you’ll be kicking yourself if things go to Hell and you don’t have them.

Even if you can’t imagine that such a nightmare would befall your group, choosing to be unprepared is foolish.

Because, while it’s certainly possible that you might be lucky and avoid tragedy, you almost certainly won’t be able to avoid people. Other people can certainly be helpful, but…there’s no guarantees. You’re just as likely to meet hostile people as you are helpful ones. If you assume that they won’t be, well, when they do inevitably come, you won’t get a chance to regret it.

Now, am I telling you anything you don’t already know? Probably not.

But, is there something wrong with preparing for a disaster, even if it doesn’t end up involving zombies? No, because, preparation is just smart. Preparing for any kind of disaster and having the correct response to it is just smart survival!

Think about it. So much of what we do: Buckle our seat belts while driving, buy insurance, learn CPR, learn to read maps, and countless other things, are done because we don’t know what’s coming, but we don’t want it surprising us. We do these things not because we expect disaster, but, because, deep in the back of our minds, we know it’s possible disasters may happen, and we want to be ready…just in case.

This is why you follow…The Rules.
