The Best In Us #1: Sacrificing for those we care about.

Am I cheating by including John taking a bullet intended for Naomi, since it technically happened in the previous episode? Well, since a lot of the episode dealt with the aftermath of that heroic act, I think we’re okay.

John’s sacrifice, as well as Naomi risking her life trying to get medical supplies to patch him up, bring up an important point: The connections we make in a zombie apocalypse should be considered very precious.

Why? Well, death comes fast in a zombie apocalypse, and every second you have with the people you care about can be your last. You can’t afford to take people for granted because either one of you could easily become zombie food.

As such, there should be nothing you won’t do to help or protect those precious few loved ones you have left in the apocalypse.

John had been searching across Texas to try to find Naomi, and was willing to take a bullet to protect her. Naomi, meanwhile, ran into the middle of a firefight and risked getting blown up with a grenade launcher just to try to get John medical supplies.

If you had a friend, a family member, or a loved one who was in trouble in a zombie apocalypse, wouldn’t you do whatever you could to help them? Wouldn’t you expect them to do the same for you?

People can be a precious gift in this life, and it falls upon us to do whatever’s possible for them when they’re in jeopardy. We can’t afford being selfish and turning our backs on our friends in their hour of need, and, frankly, I’m not sure most of us could live with it if we did.
