The Worst In Us #3: We can become ruthless.

Alicia killed Mel in what is, chronologically, anyways, the last we see of The Vultures. This occurred after Alicia first blew up the ambulance he was driving with a grenade launcher, then attempting to interrogate him as he dragged his slightly burnt body out the wreckage, before finally deciding his information wasn’t important, and stabbing him in the head.

This stands in stark contrast to what we saw of her, specifically as it pertained to Mel, in Sunday’s flashback. During said flashback, she and Nick risked their lives trying to retrieve an injured Mel. She even called Madison over the radio, telling her that going to help Mel was something she and Nick felt they had to do.

Alicia had gone from feeling that she needed to save Mel’s life, to not even caring about his answer to a question that was nagging her, and putting him down like an animal.

Unfortunately, dealing with hostiles and life-threatening situations over and over can harden people, and make them see little value in the lives of other people.

More than anything else, this is the dark path you would do well to avoid. It can make you start to see human life as expendable, inconsequential, or something to be destroyed.

For a case in point, look at the fact that Alicia, Strand, and Luciana were willing to try to kill John, Althea, and Morgan. They were after Naomi and Charlie, but were willing to kill the others and not bat an eyelash, just to get at them. If that isn’t a bad sign, I don’t know what is.

But, if you need further convincing as to why this is so bad, simply look to history. Throughout human civilization, a great many evils have been committed largely on the belief of some people that the lives of others didn’t matter.

Those aren’t the sort of footsteps you want to follow in.

So, those are three ways a zombie apocalypse can bring out the worst in us, and two ways it can bring out the best in us. Do you agree? Do you think people can rise to the occasion in bad times, or do you think bad times make people worse? Let me know in the comments!
