We CAN’T choose whether or not we end up in a zombie apocalypse. But, as Sunday’s Fear The Walking Dead made clear, we CAN choose who we are in one.

Everything is about choice. Who we are and who we become in a zombie apocalypse depends on our choices.

Sure, some choices might be easy: Do you fight a zombie, or scream at it? Do you go to the zombie-infested city…or go far away from it? But, what about the ones that aren’t so easy?

Who do you let into your group?
Who do you try to save? Do you save anyone?
How do you deal with people who cross you?

These are the kinds of choices you’ll have to make, and how you decide will change who you are and who you become.

One choice could steer us in a completely different direction from the one we might have thought we should take.

Something as simple as choosing to steal food from another person could lead to a whole chain of events that eventually lead you to becoming a different person than if you hadn’t. It could take you from being a relatively good person and turn you into someone that good person would want to shoot on sight.

Which is another thing: You can’t make excuses for yourself. If you become a bad person in a zombie apocalypse, it’s because you chose to be one.

If you start going around and killing people whose actions didn’t warrant it, or if you become a person who uses zombies as a weapon, it’s because you chose to. It’s not because this circumstance happened, or because that thing happened, it’s because you chose.

You don’t have to kill people in a zombie apocalypse. If you do, you can’t hide from that choice. Sooner or later, you’ll have to own it. If you don’t think you can handle making that choice, then…make a different one.

Which brings me to my next topic: Do you want be a good person in a zombie apocalypse, or a bad person?

This is beyond simply “Would you do this awful thing?” and goes more into the realm of the questions I started with.

Who would you let into your group? Anyone who needed your help? Or only people you thought would benefit you?

How would you treat someone who crossed you? Would you save their life if they needed it? Or, would you leave them to die?

Would you kill someone you had a grudge with, even if they hadn’t hurt anyone in your group? How about someone who tried to stop you?

Would you still value human life or would you let yourself see it as expendable?

Your answers to those questions are important, as they would determine just the kind of person you’d be. Think hard on your answers and ask yourself: What if I was on the other side of all this? What would I think of that person? What might I want to do to them?

If the answers to those questions concern you, that should tell you something.

Surviving a zombie apocalypse is about making tough choices, and, being able to live with those choices. The choices we make will determine not only what we do, but who we become in the apocalypse. Whether we become good, bad, or something in-between? The choice is ours.

This is why you follow…The Rules.
