3. About That Time Jump

Showrunner Angela Kang noted recently that there will be a time jump in season 9, and that the show will be “playing with time” as the story unfolds. The season 8 finale had the leader of the Saviors in chains with a bright future ahead for the survivors of All Out War. Well, almost all of them. Maggie, Daryl and Jesus laying the groundwork for an upheaval against Rick for keeping Negan alive at the end of the war. It seemed like season 9 would pick up where season 8 left off, but with news of the time jump we have to wonder where that leaves the story.

Hopefully the SDCC panel explains where season 9 picks up. Has the uprising taken place, or is Maggie still stewing over Negan’s capture, years later?

There’s no question that Negan has been a divisive character in the fandom, but he’s an integral part of the comic book canon upon which the show is based. Love him or hate him, unless the show makes another startling deviation from the comic books, Negan isn’t going anywhere. If anything, Rick is the one who is leaving, and the story will move on as the group figures out where to go from there.
