The Walking Dead has had a handful of memorable four-legged stars. Perhaps its time to introduce some new ones to team up with some of the characters.

If any character has a guaranteed death sentence on The Walking Dead aside from doctors and medics it is the animals. Horses, dogs, pigs, turtles, goats, tigers all met their ends at the hands of the undead and the main characters.

Sometimes the animal would die saving our heroes such as King Ezekiel’s beloved tiger Shiva whereas other times their deaths become a dark reminder that there is an apocalypse happening.

Such is the case with the one-eyed dog Beth and Daryl find seasons ago. The memories of these long-lost furry friends beg the question: why haven’t we seen more animal sidekicks?

Why not start with the leading lady who stole hearts with both compassion and strength; Michonne. Throughout the show, Michonne made it evident she likes artistic pieces hinting at what her previous life was like before the apocalypse with her son Andre.

The piece she snatched with Carl was in the shape of a colorful cat and what do you know seasons later Rick swipes a wire cat sculpture for her from the junkyard to replace the previous one. Following this theme, Michonne’s sidekick should be a nimble cat.

Cats are often independent, careful, and intriguing creatures.

Though Michonne’s personality has changed from being extremely elusive to nearly full-blown extrovert she still exhibits her independence even when she’s with Rick. She’s careful if not overly cautious at times especially when it comes to protecting those she loves.

Even back when she first revealed herself with two walkers in tow she continues to keep audiences intrigued as to what she’s thinking and how her relationship with Rick is progressing. From cats to dogs, what character would be complete with man’s best friend?

Daryl of course.

Daryl had saddled up with a horse while searching for Sophia seasons long ago however upon Beth’s suggestion that they possibly adopt the one-eyed dog they find at their doorstep does this kind of sidekick suit Daryl.

Dogs suggestively are descended from wolves. They are often used as symbols for both the unbreakable bond of families and the lone traveler.

Daryl’s character development has flipped between the loner and the loyalist more often than a light switch. One moment he’s willing to abandon his own brother recognizing Rick and the group as his true family and next he’s unable to live comfortably in Alexandria preferring searching for survivors outside the protective walls.

If any character, however, needs a redo with a certain animal and a new friend, it would be Enid. The infamous scene of her feasting upon a turtle to survive while spelling out her trademark J.S.S with turtle bones will never be forgotten.

Perhaps what Enid could use is a pet turtle…but not for eating this time. Naming it after close friend and possibly first boyfriend Carl might be a difficult task but could become a possible coping mechanism when his memory decides to surface at less than perfect moments.

Turtles might be slow-moving but when sensing danger uses their body for protection. They have become a popular character in old nursery rhymes and tales. Enid is still breaking out of her shell. The more confident she becomes the more responsibilities she wants to take on. She stayed by Maggie throughout the turmoil at The Hilltop and even pushed efforts on the Oceanside front during All Out War.

Enid in her own right, as young as she is, is becoming viewed by the group more as an adult than a teenager.

Following a path very similar to Carl.

Like the turtle, she may become an underestimated force to be reckoned with. Though Enid might still eat turtles if it meant preventing starvation she might find that she has a lot in common with this tiny buddy.

From tiny to mighty, Eugene may need someone as big and strong as his good friend Abraham. If possible Eugene would be best paired with a bear.

Sure he’d be afraid at first of the large beast. It may sense how harmless he is and grow to like him, thus a bond is born.

Having a bear would be the perfect representation of Abraham. Tall, powerful, brave and devoted.

Eugene would love to be able to immortalize his lost friend who risked his life countless times for his survival. This devotion continued even after Eugene confessed he lied the entire time about having a cure for the apocalypse.

Eugene has become braver recently, being the brains behind Rick’s victory against Negan in All Out War. The bear would be a nice addition, especially with Shiva’s loss.

A giant unexpected pet bear for a most unpredictable mullet man. What kind of animal would you want to be your sidekick in the apocalypse?
